Despite the camouflage spots in their fur, giraffes do not always remain undetected by predators. But they know to defend themselves and can kick really hard with their front hooves. They mainly do this if they want to protect their young, because the adult animals are normally rarely attacked. Anyone who has the opportunity to look at giraffes from close up can easily distinguish the females from the males. They are somewhat smaller and have thin horns with a small tuft of fur on top. Giraffe bulls, in contrast, have thick horns with no fur on top.

It is said that wolves howl at the moon, but their sounds actually serve to communicate with each other.

The orca is a large, toothed whale that belongs to the dolphin family. Its black and white colouring makes its unmistakable. Animals swimming under it don't recognise it, because the surface of the water is just as bright as its belly. And from above, you can hardly tell its apart from the sea floor thanks to its black back.

With lions, it is almost exclusively the females that go hunting.

The sloth spends almost its entire life in the trees of tropical rainforests. Its curved claws give it a firm grip on the branches of the trees. Since it always hangs from the branches upside down, the sloth’s fur grows from its belly towards its back, instead of growing from its back or head. This allows rainwater to drain away better.

Koalas are quite the sleepy heads. They spend about 14 hours each day taking extensive naps. The rest of the time, they are busy eating eucalyptus leaves. They consume about a kilogram of them every day. They are very picky and will only go for 12 of the about 300 eucalyptus species.

White-tailed deer have very good eyesight and hearing, but above all they use their sense of smell and speed.

The American wolf lifts its nose to the wind and pricks its sharp ears attentively. Could it smell something? It calls the pack together with a howl – it’s time to hunt!

The wolf silently stalks its prey. It is not alone. It knows its pack is close by. Side by side, they roam the wilderness and surround their prey. They can even take on much larger bison. Together they are strong!

The snow leopard is a large cat that lives in the high rocky mountains of Central Asia. It feeds mainly on sheep, ibex and goats. Thick fur protects it against freezing cold temperatures but its beauty means that many animals fall prey to poachers. That’s why the snow leopard is an endangered species. A special feature is its tail which, like the snow leopard from WILD LIFE, is nearly as long as its body.

The alligator is a dangerous predator with exceptionally strong jaw muscles. Only the white shark can bite harder than him. The interesting thing: Only the muscles that close the jaws are extremely strong. The muscles that open the snout are so weak that they can be closed with simple tape. Compared to the saltwater crocodile, alligators are smaller and much wider. They live only in rivers and lakes in the south-eastern part of the United States and China.

Baby giraffes are reared together with other young animals in a kind of kindergarten. A female giraffe from the herd acts as the "nursery school teacher" and looks after the calves while the other mothers search for food. If predators approach, she immediately raises the alarm. Then the female giraffes stand protectively in front of their babies and kick at the attackers. At around four months, they start to pluck and eat the small leaves from trees, but they still suckle from their mothers until they are ninth months.

It wants to join in the penguin family fun right away. Look how cute it is, waddling awkwardly up the slope to get to the ice seesaw.
